Fox Nominees for NAACP Image Awards

Long-running drama series, feature documentaries, major motion pictures and more from 21st Century Fox businesses were announced on November 20 as nominees for the 49th NAACP Image Awards, an annual program celebrating the achievements of people of color across the entertainment industry. The company received a total of 23 nominations for projects such as FOX’s Empire, Twentieth Century Fox Television’s This Is Us, and Fox Searchlight’s documentary STEP. The winners will be announced during an awards ceremony in Los Angeles, hosted by Anthony Anderson, which will air live on Monday, Jan. 15, at 9 p.m. ET on TV One.

“The NAACP Image Awards is the ultimate platform for artists and individuals of color who advocate for social justice to share their voices with millions, and to be recognized and celebrated,” stated Derrick Johnson, President and CEO, NAACP. “At a moment where there seems to be one tragic event after another in America, The NAACP Image Awards continues to be a beacon of light to the diversity reflected in television, music, film and literature that brings everyone together.”

21CF took home 11 trophies at last year’s NAACP Image Awards, including wins for Empire and This Is Us, which return this year with ten nominations between them. FOX’s event series Shots Fired, which explores the impact of a police shooting on a small Southern community, also earned six nominations for writing, acting, and directing.

The Story of Us with Morgan Freeman, which aired on National Geographic and delved into the origins of the human species, received two nominations, and Neil deGrasse Tyson was nominated for his work hosting StarTalk. Loretta Devine was nominated for her role as Cynthia on The Carmichael Show (TCFTV).

In the film categories, Octavia Spencer and Idris Elba received acting nominations for Gifted (Fox Searchlight) and The Mountain Between Us (20th Century Fox), respectively. In addition, the Fox Searchlight documentary STEP will vie for the title of Outstanding Documentary Film. The movie chronicles the true-life story of a girls’ high school step team against the background of the heart of Baltimore and became the focus of a 21CF-led donation campaign.

21CF Impact Week Volunteer Community Service

For six days and nights in October, nearly 3,000 colleagues from across 21st Century Fox businesses gave back to the communities around them as part of the second annual 21CF Impact Week. Building on the success of 21CF’s first ever company-wide week of service in 2016, which was piloted in New York and Los Angeles, colleagues in 25 U.S. cities took part in 99 service activities that benefited kids, veterans, the environment, victims of Hurricane Harvey, and many more. It is estimated that these efforts, which collectively totaled more than 9,000 hours of service, made a positive difference in the lives of more than 83,000 people. The company plans to further expand 21CF Impact Week to its global locations in 2018.

“I’m honored to work for a company that made Impact Week such an ambitious, visible initiative,” one volunteer said. “I would like 21CF to continue to send the message of encouragement to employees at Fox that we are ordinary people who can do extraordinary things for other people when make a diligent community effort.”

21CF worked with local leads at each of its U.S. based businesses to organize volunteer opportunities around its Social Impact focus areas: Creativity & the Arts, Sports & Well Being, Knowledge & Exploration, Sustainability & the Environment, and Diversity & Inclusion. Service projects included preparing meals for the homeless, cleaning up parks and gardens, building school libraries, packaging supplies for military servicemen and women, and mentoring local youth, among many others. 21CF Impact Week gave colleagues the chance to build thriving communities while strengthening their relationships with coworkers and forging new connections across the business.

In total, 21CF colleagues packed 45,800 pounds of food, made and served 82,884 meals, removed one ton of trash from lakes and rivers, collected 1,019 toys, and created 9,440 backpacks, kits, and care packages, culminating in nearly 9,050 hours of service.

Shorty Social Good Awards Fox National Geographic

21st Century Fox and National Geographic took home top honors at the second annual Shorty Social Good Awards on November 15 for developing social media campaigns that engage audiences on important social issues and empower them to take action. The winning campaigns included 21CF’s contest to award free screenings of Hidden Figures to communities across America, as well as initiatives from Nat Geo to encourage women in STEM, expand access to clean water, and inspire the genius in each of us. The Shorty Social Good Awards launched in 2016 to celebrate the power of digital storytelling tools to raise awareness and make change.

The Hidden Figures national screening series aimed to make the film available to communities where it might have the strongest impact. The film tells the “untold” story of three African American female NASA mathematicians during the Space Race of the 1960's, and it has a particular resonance for young women and women of color looking to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). 21CF invited schools, community groups, and nonprofits around the country to apply for free screenings, and distributed 3,500 free tickets throughout the spring season as a result.  

In May, National Geographic launched the Chasing Genius digital community, inspired by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Genius miniseries on the channel about Albert Einstein. Members of the community, which grew to more than 30,000 users over the summer, submitted videos detailing big ideas that could address sustainability, global health, and world hunger. The site received more than 3,000 videos, generated 230 million impressions, and sparked 3.2 million social conversations. Four winners were selected and each awarded $25,000 to develop their projects.

The Shorty Awards also recognized National Geographic for two of its partnership campaigns. Its #MakeWhatsNext campaign, a collaboration with Microsoft, won the Live Streaming Video category and aimed to recruit more young women to the STEM fields. Leading female National Geographic Explorers took part in the campaign, which celebrated International Women’s Day and included six live events in Microsoft stores across the U.S. National Geographic also partnered with Stella Artois for a water conservation campaign centered around World Water Day.

21CF National Geographic American Black Film Fest

The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) and the production company Lightbox have named director Muta’Ali as the winner of the first ever ABFF Lightbox Documentary Initiative, a new annual program sponsored by 21st Century Fox and National Geographic to support new voices in documentary film. As the winner of the competition, Muta’Ali will receive funding for his feature-length documentary project, Storm Over Brooklyn, which commemorates the 30th anniversary of the killing of 16 year-old Yusuf Hawkins. ABFF and Lightbox will work with Muta’Ali to develop the project, which is set to premiere at the American Black Film Festival in Miami in June 2019.

“National Geographic is thrilled to be part of this year’s inaugural competition, and the selection of Muta’Ali as this year’s winner is a perfect choice,” said Tim Pastore, president of original programming and production for National Geographic Channel. “Nurturing up-and-coming talent is incredibly important to us at National Geographic, and working with Lightbox and ABFF on this initiative and discovering filmmakers like Muta’Ali is really exciting.”

Since its announcement in June, the Documentary Initiative received more than 200 submissions for documentary films, all of which covered a wide range of topics that reflect the lives of people of color today. The competition was open to all African-American documentary filmmakers and any documentary filmmakers interested in exploring non-fiction stories and themes that speak directly to the African-American experience. Muta’Ali chose the racially motivated killing of black American teenager Yusuf Hawkins in Brooklyn in 1989, which led to nationally televised protests and marches.

“We were incredibly moved by the relevance and power of this story and Muta’Ali’s vision for the film,” said Jeff Friday, founder and CEO, ABFF. “The ABFF Lightbox Documentary Film Initiative is an extension of what I started with the American Black Film Festival, and I am delighted to be able to provide this new platform in partnership with Lightbox, and we are deeply grateful to National Geographic and 21st Century Fox for standing behind this meaningful initiative.”

Previously, Lightbox and National Geographic collaborated on the Emmy Award-winning feature documentary LA 92, which revisited the civil unrest in Los Angeles in 1992 following the beating of Rodney King by LAPD officers. 21CF partnered with the nonprofit Journeys in Film to create a classroom discussion guide about the film and its subject matter, made freely available for teachers to download and use in schools.

Female Directors of Fox Filmmakers Lab

On Friday, Nov. 10, 21st Century Fox Global Inclusion hosted a breakfast to honor the 25 participants of 20th Century Fox’s inaugural Fox Filmmakers Lab, a highly selective lab designed to help increase the number of female directors working in the industry. The breakfast also celebrated the 40 women directors whose films are showcased in the 31st Annual AFI Fest, which runs Nov. 9-16, 2017, in Hollywood. Over 100 guests, including female filmmakers and Fox executives, networked and continued to forge relationships that started through the Fox Filmmakers Lab.

MyKhanh Shelton, SVP of 21CF Global Inclusion, welcomed the guests at the iconic Hotel Roosevelt and thanked AFI for its partnership. Moira Griffin, Executive Director of Production and Creative Labs for 21CF Global Inclusion, moderated a panel discussion with Joey Ally, alumnus of the Fox Filmmakers Lab and director of the short film “Joy Joy Nails”; and Rosie Haber, alumnus of the AFI Directing Workshop for Women (DWW) and director of the short film “House of Jaxn.” “Joy Joy Nails” and “House of Jaxn” are both showing at this year’s AFI Fest, among 40 films directed by women. 

“The Fox Filmmakers Lab was a really cool, unique experience,” said Joey. “In the Filmmakers Lab and DWW, I was able to hone my skills writing treatments. In the Lab, I was able to meet, interface with and pitch to high-level creative executives.”

“DWW was great because I was able to meet so many amazing women directors whom I now call my friends and who are part of my network,” said Rosie.
