Earth Day Fair, Farmers’ Market, and Reusable Bags on the Fox Lot
On Thursday, April 18, hundreds of Fox employees celebrated Earth Day on the Fox Studios lot, attending the annual Fox Earth Day Fair and Farmers’ market. Dozens of vendors were on hand to provide environmental information, services and products. Local farmers provided food, and the conservation organization EnrichLA gave away free seedlings. The Fair also marked the conclusion of the annual E-Waste Drive, which began the day before. Employees were encouraged to bring their old electronics to the Lot for donation to EnrichLA.

In addition, Fox recently got rid of all plastic bags at the food outlets on the lot and replaced them with reusable to-go bags that were given to employees for free at the annual Wellness Fair. The initiative has saved more than 112,000 plastic bags that were distributed each year.
Local Foods Cooking Demo with Chef Gina Keatley in NYC
Chef Gina Keatley guided New Yorkemployees through healthy dishes made local, seasonal ingredients. Keatley is an award-winning chef, nutritionist, and humanitarian. She has become known for her food-focused television appearances, cookbooks and her campaign against the use of processed foods in low-income areas. She is the proud founder and creator of Nourishing NYC, a community food program that feeds, educates, and advocates for families in need and just expanded nationwide into Nourishing USA. Gina has been chosen in 2011 as a CNN Hero as well as a L’Oreal Women of Worth. The session included a cooking demonstration, tasting, and a Q&A session with the talented chef.
FOX Commemorates Earth Day with Employee Events, On-Air Campaigns
For Earth Day 2013, Fox Broadcasting Company continues its commitment to “Green It. Mean It.”, an initiative designed to raise both viewer and employee awareness of environmental issues. FOX also hosts a number of employee volunteering events. On April 10, FOX employees joined forces with the Heal the Bay organization to clean up the Los Angeles coastal area. FOX employees picked up a whopping 95.5 pounds of trash, and the event had its largest turnout to date. On April 26, FOX employees will participate in the third annual Habitat for Humanity Build Day and construct affordable housing for a family in need, using recycled and sustainable materials. The home build is just one component of the 2013 FBC/FX Eco-lympics, which also included a “Bring Your Own Cup” event, where free coffee, tea, and fountain drinks were provided for those who brought their own cups, saving more than 241 cups that are usually thrown away after use.
FOX’s on-air Earth Day campaign included “Green Tips” from FOX’s most beloved talent, including stars from The Following, Glee, Family Guy, Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, New Girl, The Mindy Project, and Raising Hope. In addition, using the Twitter handle @FOXTV, FOX will tweet a new eco-friendly tip every day in April, and on Monday, April 22, FOX demonstrated its commitment to the environment by turning all show logos that appear on FOX social media platforms green.
Employees Take Part in NY Cares Day
On Saturday, April 20th, company employees and New York Cares joined together to revitalize New York City. This activity was part of New York Cares Day Spring, an annual event designed to paint, plant and clean New York City’s parks and community spaces.
This year’s project took place in St. Nicholas Park in Harlem, and the teamworked to brighten and revitalize the park. The team’s tasks included a large erosion project, installing ground cover, spreading mulch, and adding gravel.
FOX TELEVISION STATIONS
Local stations around the U.S. are aired news coverage of local Earth Day and Earth Month activities. Other local events include:
- AUSTIN: FOX 7 in Austin organized the FOX 7 Electronics Recycling event, a partnership between FOX 7 and Goodwill Austin. Viewers donated their old electronics at Austin area Goodwill locations.
- WASHINGTON DC: FOX 5 hosted an on-air campaign called “Hall Your Hazards,” which provides audiences with locations of where to recycle hazardous materials.
- DETROIT: FOX 2 is the official partner of the MI Earth Day Fest, one of the largest Earth Day gatherings in the country. The festival celebrates the green efforts of local businesses and organizations, and it will take place from April 26 to April 28.
- ORLANDO: FOX 35 hosted their annual Earth Day “Adopt a Road” Clean Up, a day in which employees retrieve and dispose of all non-biodegradable materials discarded along Skyline Drive.
- TAMPA: FOX 13 hosted a number of Tampa Bay clean up events, including clean ups at the Hillsborough River and along the local coast line.
- MINNEAPOLIS: FOX 9 planned several internal activities leading up to Earth Day, including a day dedicated to cleaning employees desk areas and offering them free paper shredding. Employees were also encouraged to help pick up the station grounds.
Sky Italia: Healthy People, Healthy Planet
For this year’s Earth Day, SKY Italia unleashed an array of exciting new initiatives aimed both at audiences and employees. Their major event is an Earth Day concert that will air on SKY channels 21 and 22 in Italy, which aims to raise awareness of environmental issues. There will also be a special segment on SKY News dedicated to Earth Day and the environment. In addition, Bologna basketball and soccer teams will show their dedication to environmental causes by wearing green jerseys during their games.
To engage their employees, SKY developed a host of projects under its new “Healthy People, Healthy Planet” initiative. SKY launched a new intranet site for employees to share ideas and find tips on how to live a little greener. SKY also released the first edition of “Go Green” Magazine, an internal publication with content generated by employees. In addition, SKY hosted a “Steps Counting” contest to reduce usage of cars and elevators. Employees wore pedometers, and whichever department had the most steps logged by Earth Day won a prize. Finally, SKY decked out its entire building with Earth Day stickers, posters, and panels on the walls, elevators, bathroom, printing room, and meeting room.

Fox Film’s Commitment to Solar Power and Green Production
Fox Film reports that the solar panel installations at Fox Studios have now saved over 630,000 kWh of electricity, reducing CO2 emissions by 300 tons – the equivalent of not using nearly 32,000 gallons of gasoline.
Fox was also one of the many studios to partner with the Producers Guild of America to develop an app version of the Green production Guide, a web-based tool to help studios integrate sustainability into the film production process.
